NFSI stands for National Floor Safety Institute. The National Floor Safety Institute was founded in 1997 as a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to aid in the prevention of slip-and-fall accidents through education, training and research.

The NFSI has a series of comprehensive tests for walkway materials, floor maintenance products and floor coatings. The NFSI's goal is to determine the the safety of these items in terms of their traction values. When a manufacturer submits their products to the NFSI and the items pass these test they are certified by the NFSI as "high traction"
